Comcast and Diamond Sports Group Reach Carriage Deal

Comcast and Diamond Sports Group have reached a pivotal carriage deal, bringing an end to the months-long blackout of Bally Sports channels for Comcast customers. This resolution couldn’t come at a better time, with fans eager to catch their local teams in action as the sports seasons kick into high gear.

Starting from the beginning of August, customers will once again have the opportunity to watch their favorite MLB, NBA, and NHL games. This deal is particularly significant for Xfinity subscribers on the "Ultimate TV" package, who will now have access to live, local sports broadcasts. The blackout, which began in early May, had left many fans in prominent markets like Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami grappling with the frustration of missing out on viewing their local teams.

A Strategic Move Amid Bankruptcy

For Diamond Sports Group, the agreement with Comcast marks a critical milestone in their ongoing restructuring efforts. The company, which has been navigating bankruptcy under Chapter 11 for the past 16 months, owns 15 regional sports networks under the Bally Sports banner. “Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity,” stated David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group.

As part of their restructuring strategy, Diamond Sports Group has also been focused on solidifying agreements with major leagues, specifically the NHL and NBA. “With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA,” added Preschlack. His remarks underscore the urgency of these negotiations, particularly with the NBA and NHL seasons fast approaching.

Viewership Options and Promotions

Adding to the excitement, Bally Sports’ streaming app will provide in-market viewing options for fans of teams like the Marlins, Rays, Royals, and Tigers. Meanwhile, fans of the Braves and Twins will need to rely on broadcast channels for their local game coverage. The diversity of viewing options ensures that fans have multiple ways to stay connected with their favorite local teams.

Xfinity is capitalizing on this renewed partnership by offering attractive promotions. Subscribers to the "Ultimate TV" package can enjoy a free three-month trial, with the package pricing set at an additional $20 per month thereafter. Customers have until August 30 to upgrade their subscriptions in order to take full advantage of the promotional period.

Looking Ahead

Diamond Sports Group’s focus now shifts towards finalizing its agreements with the NHL and NBA and presenting a reorganization plan to the court. “We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court,” said Preschlack. The company currently holds linear rights to 12 Major League Baseball teams and is keen on stabilizing its partnerships across all sports.

David Preschlack’s leadership appears instrumental in navigating the complexities of the current situation. With the new carriage deal with Comcast secured, fans can once again look forward to an uninterrupted sports viewing experience, a welcome change after the prolonged blackout period.

Comcast’s strong presence in key markets and Diamond Sports Group’s extensive network coverage are set to restore a sense of normalcy and excitement for sports enthusiasts. As the company continues to refine its strategy and finalize key deals, fans eagerly await the full return of their favorite sports broadcasts on Bally Sports channels.
