The New England Patriots' Versatile Asset: Mike Onwenu's Evolution

In an era of constant lineup changes and strategic adjustments, the New England Patriots have discovered a reliable cornerstone in Mike Onwenu. His journey since entering the NFL has been nothing short of remarkable, highlighting his adaptability and resilience in the shifting landscape of professional football.

The Patriots recently solidified their commitment to Onwenu, securing him to a three-year, $57 million contract in March. This substantial investment underscores the faith the organization has in his abilities and potential. Selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Onwenu has consistently proven his mettle, overcoming the hurdles often faced by late-round picks.

Rookie Year: Establishing a Role

Onwenu made an immediate impact in his rookie season, stepping into the league as a right tackle. His performance during this period helped cement his role within the team, showcasing his ability to adapt quickly to the professional level. Onwenu's firm grasp of the right tackle position offered the Patriots stability and reliability on the offensive line.

A Year of Split Duties

In his second year, Onwenu's versatility became increasingly evident as he split duties between right and left tackle. This ability to shift seamlessly between positions did not go unnoticed by the coaching staff. His flexibility provided the team with much-needed versatility, enabling them to adapt to various game plans and opposing defenses.

A Shift to Right Guard

The 2022 season saw the Patriots make a strategic move, transitioning Onwenu to right guard for the majority of the season. This decision highlighted Onwenu's adaptability and his willingness to embrace new challenges for the betterment of the team. By the end of the season, he once again showcased his versatility by returning to right tackle.

Continual Adaptation

During the offseason, Onwenu continued to demonstrate his ability to adapt to the team's needs. He resumed his role at right tackle during Organized Team Activities (OTAs), only to shift back to right guard during mandatory minicamp. His seamless transitions between positions have become a defining feature of his career.

In a notable practice session, Calvin Anderson occupied the right tackle position, while Chukwuma Okorafor anchored the left tackle spot. Sidy Sow played at left guard with David Andrews at center. This flexibility within the offensive line is a testament to the depth and adaptability the Patriots have cultivated.

Coaching and Strategy

Head Coach Jerod Mayo has been vocal about the importance of having versatile players like Onwenu. “I've had this conversation with AVP [Alex Van Pelt]. I've also talked to Mike and the rest of those offensive linemen. Look, we're going to put the best five players out there on the field as an offensive line. If that means you've got to play guard or play tackle, I don't know. We'll see, it'll play itself out in camp. That's my mindset, it's about putting the best players on the field.”

Onwenu himself embraces this mindset: “It was essentially just practice in a few places. Days in and days out, we're going to be switching around, and it's going to be different lines, so just getting the best five out there and practicing, every guy practicing each position, and just knowing that you can play that position.”

Reflecting on his journey, Onwenu acknowledges the surprises and challenges he has faced: “It was a little surprising. Pretty much as a football player, I've done it in the past. I started as a guard, started as a jumbo tackle, and then I played tackle. It's just one of the positions that I play.”

As the team progresses through the preseason, Onwenu emphasizes the importance of finding the best fit for the team: “It is very important. It's early now so we had the OTAs, we had the spring, but we're getting into live football now. As the practices and the days go on, we'll see who fits where and how that fits with the best five.”

The Patriots' coaching strategy and Onwenu’s adaptability exemplify the dynamic nature of the NFL. As the Patriots prepare for the upcoming season, Mike Onwenu's flexibility and commitment will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their pursuit of success.
