In a groundbreaking move, the Seattle Kraken have added Jessica Campbell to their coaching staff, making her the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in NHL history. Campbell, who previously served as an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, brings a wealth of experience and a history of breaking barriers to her new role.
A Trailblazer in Coaching
Jessica Campbell's appointment to the Kraken is the latest achievement in a career filled with notable firsts. In 2022, she became the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) and also the first woman to coach a men's national team during the IIHF Men's World Championship with Team Germany. Her impressive resume includes experience as a power-skating coach for a diverse group of athletes, including Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson.
Player Development Expertise
During her tenure with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, Campbell made a significant impact on player development. Kraken coach Dan Bylsma specifically highlighted her ability to cultivate relationships with her players as a key factor in her hiring. "During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level," Bylsma stated.
One of Campbell's standout successes at Coachella Valley was Tye Kartye, who won the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for most outstanding rookie under her guidance. Kartye went on to score 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) over 77 games for the Kraken, exemplifying Campbell's ability to nurture and develop talent.
Beyond the Bench
Campbell's coaching career also includes impressive stints beyond the bench. In the 2014-15 season, she served as the team captain in the first-ever CWHL All-Star Game. In 2021, Campbell took on coaching roles with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers, further diversifying her coaching portfolio. Most recently, she worked with Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer during the 2022 IIHF Men's World Championship, providing specialized training that contributed to his performance.
The Kraken's Power Play
As she joins the Kraken, Campbell's responsibilities will likely include heading the team's power play. She has a proven track record in this area, having managed the Firebirds’ power play in addition to her broader coaching duties. Her appointment signals a commitment to innovation and excellence from the Kraken organization, enhancing their coaching staff with a fresh and effective perspective.
A Humble and Determined Approach
Despite her historic achievements, Campbell remains focused and grounded. "I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am," she said. "It's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization."
Campbell's approach to coaching emphasizes hard work and a growth mindset. "For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal," she added. Her philosophy aligns with her dedication to continual improvement, aiming to coach at the highest level without adhering to rigid timelines.
"I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is," Campbell concluded.
Looking Forward
As the Seattle Kraken move forward with Campbell on their coaching staff, the NHL witnesses a significant moment in its history. Campbell’s blend of experience, innovative coaching techniques, and ability to develop player relationships ensures that she will be a valuable asset to the Kraken as they strive for success in the league.
In a league striving for progressive and dynamic changes, Campbell’s appointment could pave the way for increased diversity in NHL coaching staffs, embodying both the spirit of inclusion and competitive excellence.
